Film Studies: creating a Cannes do attitude

So today was the first day of the world-famous – and sometimes infamous – Cannes Film Festival. The festival is a whirlwind celebration of art, arrogance, glitz, glamour and lots and lots of opportunism.

But beyond the mega-yachts, red carpets, champagne receptions and marketing campaigns, Cannes is also an event that can pluck film-makers and films from relative obscurity and place them directly in the spotlights for the world to see. With more than 2,200 artists, 4,300 journalists, 13,600 distributors, producers, exhibitors and industrialists in attendance, the festival is a huge platform for national film boards to showcase domestic productions and talents on a global stage.

Irish films at this year’s Cannes include the excellent What Richard Did and, somewhat surprisingly, the boisterous The Hardy Bucks Movie.

Of course discovering, nurturing and developing new talent is essential for the health of the film industry – at both the local and the international levels. After all, even the most glamourous starlets and most revered directors did not start at the top rung of the ladder.

Part-time diploma and degree-level courses in Film Production, Film-Making, or Film-Appreciation will help harness and develop the enthusiasm and talents of any film aficionados. And it is not just long-term programmes that can help you deepen your movie knowledge – a short-term introductory Film course will provide an appreciable grounding in the essentials as well as give you the chance to assemble a portfolio of work for further learning – or maybe for a meeting with a movie executive in a swanky hotel in sunny Cannes…
